Canisius College senior Mike Goemans (Guelph, Ontario) was one of eight players - and one of three pitchers - honored as a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on Monday.
Goemans threw a one-hit shutout of Manhattan in the final game of the Golden Griffins' weekend sweep, a 4-0 victory at the Demske Sports Complex on Sunday. Goemans allowed a second-inning single, walked a batter in the third inning and also hit a batter in the third before retiring the final 19 Manhattan batters to complete the shutout victory.
It was the first one-hitter by a Canisius pitcher since Mike Bax on April 9, 2005 and first one-hit, nine-inning shutout by a Golden Griffin in the last 20 years. Goemans, a 2009 all-MAAC Second-Team selection, improved to 5-3 on the season and has a 4.36 ERA, the lowest ERA among the Canisius starting pitchers.
Canisius is 34-16 overall and 16-2 in the MAAC and has already clinched a berth in the 2010 MAAC Championship with six games left on the regular-season schedule. The Griffs can clinch the regular-season MAAC title with one win in the upcoming weekend series at Marist (May 15-16).
