Canisius College senior Mike Goemans (Guelph, Ontario) claimed his third award of the week as he was named the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Northeast Pitcher of the Week Wednesday. Goemans was one of five pitchers recognized by the website. Earlier in the week, Goemans was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper as well the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Goemans is the third Golden Griffin to be honored by CollegeBaseballInsider.com this season as senior Perry Silverman (Feb. 12) and junior Steve McQuail (April 11) were named Northeast Region Players of the Week earlier this season by the website.
Goemans threw a one-hit shutout of Manhattan in the final game of the Golden Griffins' weekend sweep, a 4-0 victory at the Demske Sports Complex on Sunday. Goemans allowed a second-inning single, walked a batter in the third inning and also hit a batter in the third before retiring the final 19 Manhattan batters to complete the shutout victory.
It was the first one-hitter by a Canisius pitcher since Mike Bax on April 9, 2005 and first one-hit, nine-inning shutout by a Golden Griffin in the last 20 years. Goemans, a 2009 all-MAAC Second-Team selection, improved to 5-3 on the season and has a 4.36 ERA, the lowest ERA of any Canisius starting pitcher.
Canisius is 34-16 overall and 16-2 in the MAAC and have already clinched a berth in the 2010 MAAC Championship with six games left on the regular-season schedule. The Griffs can clinch the regular-season MAAC title with one win in the upcoming weekend series at Marist (May 15-16).
