Former Canisius College pitcher John Axford has been an integral part of the Milwaukee Brewers during the 2011 season, including the team's current run in the National League playoffs. 

Axford recorded his second save of the playoffs on Sunday, with a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning in Game 1 of the Natioal League Championship Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. In the Division Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Port Dover, Ontario native had the save in Game 1 and also earned the win in the 10-inning, series-clinching victory in Game 5. 

During the regular season, Axford tied for the National League lead with 46 saves, converting his last 43 regular-season save opportunities. On the season, Axford was 2-2 with a 1.95 earned run average in 74 appearances. The 6-foot-6 righty struck out 86 batters in 73.2 innings pitched. He also earned the coveted Rolaids Relief Man award for the National League.

Axford spent the 2006 season with the Golden Griffins after earning his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame. In his 14 starts with Canisius, Axford went 3-8 with a 5.01 earned run average and two complete games. In 70 innings pitched, Axford had 75 strikeouts and held opposing hitters to a .230 batting average.
