Current members of the Golden Griffin basbeall program along with members who graduated following the 2011 season have been recognized by various media outlets recently.
Senior infielder Drew Pettit was named to the College Sports Madness Preseason First Team while sophomore Shane Zimmer was named to the College Sports Madness Preseason Second Team. Former Griffs Sean Jamieson, Brian Burton and Shane Davis, along with Pettit, were named to the Canadian Baseball Network All-Canadian Team for 2011.
Jamieson earned All-Canadian First-Team honors and received 38 first-place votes from the 41 voters as the top Canadian shortstop in 2011, one first-place vote away from being the Canadian Baseball Network Player of the Year. Jamieson hit .350 with 13 home runs and 51 RBI en route to being drafted in the 17th round by the Oakland Athletics. Davis and Pettit earned Third-Team honors. Davis went 5-6 with a 3.25 ERA in 15 starts and was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 42nd round. Burton received honorable mention honors at first base after hitting .308 with five home runs and 47 RBI as a senior in 2011.
Pettit earned Capital One Academic All-America honors following his junior season when he hit .345 with six home runs and 40 RBI. He led the MAAC with a .423 batting average in conference play and hit .425 with runners in scoring position. Zimmer made 52 appearances, including 42 starts, as a freshman, hitting .268 with a .389 on-base percentage. Zimmer earned MAAC Rookie of the Week honors at the end of the regular season and was 10-for-24 with two home runs and six RBI in the final 10 games of the season.
The Golden Griffins start the 2012 season on Friday, Feb. 17, in a four-game, neutral-site series in Cary, N.C. at the USA Baseball Complex. Canisius opens the campaign against Youngstown State with first pitch set for 1:30 o.m.
