Softball Earns Split in Doubleheader with Marist

The Canisius College softball team earned a split in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader action on Saturday afternoon against Marist at the Demske Sports Complex. After dropping the opening contest by the score of 10-2, the Golden Griffins bounced back in the second game with a 6-4 win over the visiting Red Foxes. The Griffs are now 17-14 on the season and 2-2 in MAAC action, while the Red Foxes move to 14-16 and 3-1 in the conference

In the doubleheader, senior Katie Medina and freshman Tori Nappo each went a combined 3-for-5. Nappo recorded a pair of doubles, including one run and an RBI. Junior Valorie Nappo and Marissa Miller each collected the Griffs' home runs, including Miller's three-run shot in game two.

Despite striking out a total of 12 batters, senior Amanda Baun (4-4) recorded the loss in 6.1 innings of work for the Griffs in game one. Junior Jen Consaul collected her 12th win of the season in game two, improving to 12-7 on the year. Consaul retired six batters in 7.0 innings, allowing four runs off six hits.

The Golden Griffins opened game one of the afternoon with Baun striking out the first six batters she faced.

In the third inning, the Red Foxes generated offense off a couple bunts. With runners on first and second, second baseman Nicole Cheek put the Red Foxes on the board with a two-RBI single through the left side.

The Griffs split the Red Foxes' lead to 2-1 with freshman Meghan Cuda scoring from third on a play at first.

The Red Foxes extended their lead to 6-1 in the top of the fifth, including a three-RBI triple down ther leftfield line by Cheek.

Junior Valorie Nappo crushed her first home run of the season to center in the bottom of the fifth, cutting into the Red Foxes' 6-2 lead.

The Red Foxes secured the victory in the top of the seventh with four runs off back-to-back home runs. With a pair of runners on base, catcher Alyssa Zahka gave the Red Foxes a 9-2 lead off a three-run home run followed by a solo shot by shortstop Kursten Van Natta.

Given the score, only one hit separated Marist and Canisius. The Red Foxes had nine hits to the Griffs' eight. 

After the Red Foxes opened game two with a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Golden Griffins exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third.

Sophomore Robin Kennery gave the Griffs their first lead of the afternoon with a two-run double down the right field line. Tori Nappo pushed the Griffs' lead to 3-1 with a an RBI-double down the opposite line. Following a Marist pitching change, Miller drilled a shot to deep left field to give the Griffs a 6-1 lead with a three-run blast.

The Red Foxes came fighting back in the top of the fifth with three runs to pull within a pair of the Griffs, 6-4. Designated player Janine Lalli started the Red Foxes' rally effort with an RBI-double to right-center. With a runner on third, left fielder Collen McWilliams belted a two-run shot over the right field wall to cut into the Griffs' lead, 6-4.

The Blue and Gold will next face Robert Morris on Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader. The pitch for game one is set for 3 p.m.

GAME NOTES: Holding the longest hitting streak for a Griff this season, Cuda's ten-game hitting streak came to an end in game two... The Griffs move to 26-12 in the all-time series against Marist... The Griffs and Red Foxes have split their last six doubleheaders.
