The Canisius volleyball team won for the fourth time in five matches after a four-set win at Rider University in Alumni Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins won 25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 25-20 to open MAAC play with a 2-0 record.

Freshman Jacklyn Malusa had her fourth double-double of the season with a career-high 18 kills to go along with 13 digs. Fellow freshman outside hitter Katlyn Tyler had 12 kills and six digs in three sets of action. Senior Roxanne Hernandez paced the Canisius block with a career-high 10 blocks as Canisius had 14 blocks in the match.

Sophomore Lauren Siebert added 10 kills and a 364 attack percentage. Junior Emily Litwin had her first career double-double with 23 digs and 11 assists. Senior Sydney Palka and sophomore Grace Streicher each had 22 assists, with Streicher posting her second career double-double with 12 digs.

"I felt that collectively we were able to play with heart and stuck to a game plan, which allowed us to take care of our side of the net," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "We need to bring what we've done the past couple of weekends back to our gym and take advantage of playing at home."

Canisius broke open the first set with a 9-2 run, going up 15-7 after a service ace from senior Jessica Warner. The Broncs cut the deficit to two points late in the set, but Canisius won the final two points, capped by a kill from sophomore Rachel Kline, to take the opening set.

After Rider (9-3, 1-1 MAAC) evened the match by winning the second set, the Griffs bounced back in the third set. Canisius won five straight points to go up 13-8 and never let Rider get closer than four points the rest of the set. A back-row kill from Malusa put Canisius up 2-1 in the match.

Canisius took the early lead in the fourth set and never gave it back, again scoring five straight points in the middle of the set to build a 15-8 advantage. Rider again could never get closer than four points as the 18th kill of the day from Malusa put the match away.

Kaitlyn Griffin led Rider with 16 kills while Ryan Ackermann had a double-double with 15 kills and 19 digs.

Canisius (4-9, 2-0 MAAC) returns to the Koessler Athletic Center next week to begin a stretch of five straight home matches. The Golden Griffins start the homestand against Marist College at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
