Two Canisius baseball players have earned weekly honors from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Senior Jimmy Luppens (Wading River, N.Y.) received the MAAC Player of the Week award while junior Rohn Pierce (Lockport, N.Y.) earned MAAC Pitcher of the Week for the second time in the season’s first three weeks.

Luppens recorded multi-hit games in all three contests, posting four extra base hits and collecting six RBIs in a sweep of East Tennessee State. The MAAC Preseason Player of the Year hit .500 with two doubles and two home runs, posting a 1.167 slugging percentage on the weekend. He also had at least one RBI and scored a run in each game. A third-inning double from Luppens in Saturday’s 2-0 win proved to be the game-winning hit.

Luppens earned MAAC Player of the Week honors for the third time in his career.

Through nine games, is hitting .333 with three doubles, two home runs, nine RBI, a .633 slugging percentage and .487 on-base percentage.

Pierce, who won MAAC Pitcher of the Week honors after the opening weekend when he defeated No. 5 North Carolina State and All-American Carlos Rodon, threw his first career shutout in a 2-0 win at defending Atlantic Sun champion East Tennessee State on Saturday. The junior allowed three hits, walked zero and struck out six on 87 pitches. Pierce retired the first 10 batters he faced and also retired the final 12 batters of the contest. The 6-foot-3 righty only allowed one baserunner to reach second base in the entire game.

Pierce (2-0) is tied for 19th in the country among pitchers with at least 20 innings thrown with a 0.78 earned run average. Pierce has two walks and 18 strikeouts in 23 innings pitched.

Canisius (6-3), winners of fourth straight, returns to the field for a four-game series at Norfolk State. The series begins with a single game on Friday, with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
