The Canisius softball team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but host Cal State Fullerton scored 10 runs over the game’s final four innings as the Titans posted a 10-2 victory in six innings Monday night at Anderson Field in Fullerton, Calif. The win moves Fullerton to 18-12 on the season while the Golden Griffins have now dropped six straight to fall to 3-13 on the season.

Canisius scored a run in the top of the first and another run in the top half of the third to take a 2-0 lead through 2.5 innings of play. In the first, freshman Jessica Berzins led the game off with a double down the left-field line, and she later scored on an RBI-single by fellow freshman Lindsey Silfer. For Silfer, that RBI was her third of the season. In the top half of the third frame, Canisius made the score 2-0 on a bunt-single by junior Robin Kennery. Berzins led off the third by drawing a walk, and she advanced to third on a double by sophomore Alexis Roman. Kennery followed Roman’s two-base hit with the bunt single which allowed Berzins to score from third. That would be the last runs of the evening for the Griffs however, as Fullerton went to the bullpen with two relievers that held Canisius without a hit over the game’s final three innings.

The Titans scored a single run in the home half of the third to cut the Griffs’ lead to 2-1, and in the bottom of the fourth, the home team scored four runs on four hits to take a 5-2 lead, with the big hit coming from designated player Eliza Crawford, who smacked a three-run homer with two outs in the frame. Fullerton added a single tally in the fifth and then scored four times in the sixth to end the game early.

Christine Washington earned the win for the Titan after she came on in relief of starter Monique Wesley. Washington did not allow a hit in her two innings of work where she walked two and struck out two. Canisius senior Jen Consaul took the loss for the Blue and Gold in the circle after she gave up 10 runs, nine earned, on 10 hits while walking seven and striking out three.

Canisius will return to action Thursday, March 20, when the team starts play in the Loyola Marymount Invitational – II. The Griffs will play Bethune Cookman at 2 p.m., before taking on the host LMU Lions at 4 p.m.
