After Long Island took a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning, the Canisius College baseball team scored 10 unanswered runs and got eight shutout innings from six relievers to pick up an 11-5 win over Long Island at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis, N.C. on Sunday. The Golden Griffins take three of four from the Blackbirds in the series and improve to 6-2 on the season.

Seniors Ian Choy and Perry Silverman reached base in four of their five plate appearances and combined to score five runs on the day. Senior Shayne Willson was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI while junior Brian Burton was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Redshirt Jarred Flock was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Junior Josh Marshall threw four shutout innings, allowing five hits and striking out three to pick up his second win of the season. Five other Canisius pitchers combined to finish out the game — Ryan Fennell, Matt Thomas, Andrew Van’tWout, Scott Whitehead and Shayne Willson — as each team used seven pitchers.

Canisius scored on a Sean Jamieson sacrifice fly in the top of the first before Long Island (1-3) responded with a two-out, grand slam from Drew Walsh. The Blackbirds added another run in the second on an RBI single from Tyler Jones. After the RBI single, Marshall retired seven straight and 11 of the final 12 batters he faced on the day.

The Griffs responded with three multi-run innings, starting with a three-run third. Canisius loaded the bases on a Silverman walk, Jamieson single and hit by pitch to Choy. Willson’s sacrifice fly scored Silverman and a two-out, two-RBI single from Steve McQuail made the score 5-4.

Canisius took the lead with a three-run fifth as Choy led off by being hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. After Willson replaced him on a fielder’s choice, Burton singled to put runners at first and second. McQuail would reach on an error that allowed Willson to score. Flock followed with an RBI single and Paul Panik had an RBI groundout to make it 7-5.

The Griffs broke the game open with a four-run fifth. Silverman led off with a single and Choy’s one-out single put runners at first and second. Willson doubled home Silverman and put runners at second and third. Burton had a two-RBI single and Flock’s two-out RBI single scored Burton to make it 11-5.

Canisius returns to the field for three games at Lipscomb next weekend. The first game is scheduled for Friday, with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
