The Canisius College baseball team used a two-RBI single from junior Christian Segar in the top of the 10th inning to defeat Duke University 5-4 in Durham, N.C. on Friday night. The Golden Griffins improve to 3-1 on the season.
Trailing 3-2 in the top of the ninth, junior Chris Gruarin reached on a one-out single and advanced to third on an errant throw on a pickoff attempt. Junior Brooklyn Foster came through with the two-out, RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.
Sophomore Jose Torralba led off the top of the 10th with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Jesse Kelso. Torralba would steal third and a walk to junior Manny Hernandez put runners at the corners. Hernandez then stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Segar followed with one-out, two-RBI single up the middle to give the Griffs a 5-3 lead.
Redshirt junior Nathan Linseman (1-0) got the first two outs in the bottom of the 10th before sophomore Jon Fitzsimmons came into the game. Duke scored one run and got runners to second and third with two outs, but Fitzsimmons got a strikeout to end the game and record his second save of the season.
Segar went 2-for-5 on the day with two RBI and two stolen bases. Gruarin was 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Kelso went 2-for-3.
