Canisius scored all six of its runs with two outs and defeated Duke 6-4 in 11 innings on Sunday afternoon to earn a four-game series split with the Blue Devils. The Golden Griffins are now 4-3 on the season.
Sophomore Jose Torralba went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Sophomore Ronnie Bernick was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Sophomores Shane Zimmer and Ryan Coppinger each reached base twice with two walks, with Zimmer recording his fourth multi-walk game of the season.
After Duke (4-5) scored in the bottom of the first, the Griffs tied the game in the top of the second as sophomore Jesse Kelso drew a two-out walk, stole second and eventually scored on an RBI single from Bernick. The Blue Devils would build a 4-1 lead, scoring once in the third and twice in the fifth.
Canisius tied the game with a three-run seventh inning, scoring all three runs with two outs. Zimmer drew a leadoff walk and a two-out walk to Coppinger with Bernick being hit by a pitch loaded the bases. Torralba also drew a two-out walk to force home a run. Sophomore Jimmy Luppens followed with a two-RBI single to tie the game at 4-4.
Canisius mounted another two-out rally in the 11th as pinch hitter Jesse Puscheck singled to shortstop. Bernick followed with an RBI double to give Canisius the lead. Torralba followed with an RBI single to add an insurance run and put Canisius ahead by two.
Freshman Rohn Pierce made his first career start and went four innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. The trio of Jason Rubenstein, Nathan Linseman and Jon Fitzsimmons combined for six scoreless innings of relief. Linseman (2-0) went 2.1 scoreless innings to pick up the win, his second of the weekend, while Fitzsimmons got a strikeout to pick up his third save of the season.
Canisius returns to the field for a four-game, neutral-site series with Long Island University next weekend at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C. First pitch for Friday's game is set for 3 p.m.
Notes: The Griffs have a save in all four wins this season... Canisius was 5-for-16 (.313) on the day in two-out situations... After the sixth inning, Canisius didn't allow a Duke base runner to get past second base... Zimmer and junior Chris Gruarin have reached base in all seven games while Bernick has a hit in five of his six starts... Zimmer leads the team with a .533 on-base percentage.
