Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Long Island

The Canisius College baseball team swept a doubleheader against Long Island University at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C. on Friday afternoon. The Golden Griffins won the first game 8-5 and took the nightcap 8-3 to improve to 6-3 on the season.

Game 1 - Canisius 8, Long Island 5

After Long Island scored twice in the top of the second, the Griffs came back with two in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Shane Zimmer walked with one out and freshman Connor Panas was hit by a pitch. After a groundout from freshman Mike Booth advanced the runners 90 feet, freshman Mike Krische reached on an error to score Zimmer, and a single from sophomore Ronnie Bernick tied the game at 2-2.

The Griffs scored two more in the bottom of the third as junior Christian Segar led off with a single and senior Drew Pettit followed with a double to put runners in scoring position with no outs. Segar scored on a groundout from junior Chris Gruarin and Pettit scored on an RBI single from Zimmer to put Canisius up 4-2.

Long Island took the lead with one in the fourth and two in the fifth on a home run from Julian Castro. The Griffs tied the game at 5-5 when sophomore Jose Torralba drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an RBI single from Gruarin.

Long Island loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth on reliever Nathan Linseman. However, the redshirt junior threw a runner out at the plate for the second out and got a groundout for the third out of the inning. Canisius scored the game-winning runs in the seventh as Segar drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a single from Pettit. Gruarin walked to load the bases and Zimmer walked to force home a run. Panas followed with a two-RBI double to give the Griffs a three-run lead.

Linseman (3-0) pitched a scoreless eighth and got the first out of the ninth before sophomore Jon Fitzsimmons got the final two outs of the ninth for his fourth save of the season. Redshirt junior Billy Martin went five innings, allowing five runs and striking out five.

Game 2 ­- Canisius 8, Long Island 3

Canisius scored the first eight runs of the second game of Friday's doubleheader, getting three in the second and five in the fourth. Sophomore Ryan Coppinger had an RBI single and junior Manny Hernandez had a two-RBI single to give Canisius the 3-0 lead. The Griffs broke the game open in the fourth, scoring a run on catcher's interference, getting a bases-clearing triple from Gruarin and an RBI groundout from freshman Sam Cumbo.

Sophomore Garrett Cortright (2-1) went five innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits while striking out seven. Redshirt senior Tim Seil threw two scoreless innings of relief.

Canisius and Long Island are scheduled for one game on Saturday, with first pitch set for noon.

Notes: Gruarin had a team-high five RBI on the day... Long Island stranded 24 runners on the weekend - 14 in the opener and 10 in the second game... The Griffs have now won eight of the last nine meetings between the teams... Zimmer and Gruarin have reached base in all nine games this season... Bernick extended his team-long hititng streak to five games... The three hits for Coppinger in game two matched a career high... Cortright has 17 strikeouts in 16 innings this season... Fitzsimmons did not strike a batter out for the first time in his four appearances... The three strikeouts for Seil matched a career high.
