The Canisius College baseball team snapped a five-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over Oakland University at Time Warner Cable Stadium in Dayton, Ohio on Friday. The Golden Griffins improve to 8-10 overall.

Oakland starter Russell Luxton held Canisius without a hit until the fourth inning, when the Golden Griffins strung together four consecutive hits. Senior Drew Pettit started the one-out rally with a single up the middle. Sophomore Shane Zimmer singled to left, and freshman Jesse Puscheck singled home Pettit to tie the game at 1-1. Junior Brooklyn Foster produced the Griffs' fourth straight single, but Zimmer was thrown out at the plate for the second out of ht inning.

The Griffs would end up scoring five straight runs - getting two runs in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, sophomore Ronnie Bernick was hit by a pitch with one out and sophomore Jose Torralba followed with a two-run homer to left-center to give Canisius the lead. In the sixth, Zimmer started the inning with a walk and Puscheck reached after being hit by pitch. After a sacrifice bunt from Foster moved the two runners into scoring position, pinch hitter Jimmy Luppens singled up the middle to score both runners and put Canisius ahead 5-1.

Oakland (2-10) scored a run in the eighth and then used a leadoff homer to start the ninth to make it 5-3. Redshirt junior Billy Martin got the next two batters in the ninth but after a two-out single, sophomore Jon Fitzsimmons came into the game and got a strikeout to close it out and record his fifth save of the season.

Martin (2-1) went 8.2 innings, yielding 11 hits and walking one while giving up the three runs.

Canisius returns to the field for two games on Saturday. The Golden Griffins play the host Dayton Flyers at 11 a.m., and then play Oakland at 3 p.m.

Notes: Pettit made his first start of the season and fifth of his career at first base. Pettit started four games at first base as a sophomore, most recently March 24, 2010, against St. Bonaventure... Puscheck started at third base, his second start of the season... Zimmer extended his streak of consecutive games reaching base to 25 games... Foster pushed his hitting streak to seven games while the pinch-hit single extended Luppens' hitting streak to seven games... The 8.2 innings from Martin was his longest start since he went nine innings at George Washington on April 9, 2011... Torralba has 10 RBIs in the last five games.
