The Canisius College baseball team fell 11-3 at No. 23 Virginia on Wednesday.

Perry Silverman led the Griffs with three hits and two RBIs while Shayne Willson had two hits. Kevin Mailloux reached base twice via walks, but saw his 20-game hit streak come to an end.

Virginia took the lead with a three-run second inning, and scored at least one run for seven consecutive innings. The Cavaliers took advantage of two Canisius errors and a balk to score the three runs. Steven Proscia had an RBI single and would score on a Canisius error later in the inning. Danny Hultzen scored the third Virginia run on a balk.

The Griffs (6-9) responded with a run in the third. Silverman led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly from Branson Joseph.

After Virginia (17-0) made the score 4-1 with a run in the bottom of the third, Canisius scored two runs in the top of the fourth. Willson had a one-out single and moved to third on a double from Kevin Mahoney. After Brian Gibbs struck out, Connor Burke walked to load the bases. Silverman had a two-out, two-RBI single to make the score 4-3.

Viriginia would hold the Canisius offense scoreless the rest of the way, as the Cavaliers scored once in the fourth, three times in the fifth and plated single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth.

Benson Merritt started for the Griffs and allowed eight runs, six earned in his 4.2 innings of work while allowing nine hits, walking three and striking out three. Matt Weber allowed two runs in his 2.1 innings of work and Ryan Fennell allowed one run in the eighth.

Virginia starter Robert Poulter allowed three runs in 4.2 innings of work. Tyler Wilson relieved Poulter and threw 3.2 scoreless innings while striking out five.

Canisius continues its Spring Break trip on Thursday, taking on Longwood. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
