Women's Basketball Heads To Rival Niagara Friday

QUICK HITTERS

  • The Canisius women’s basketball team faces rival Niagara University in a Battle of the Bridge contest at the Gallagher Center on Friday night.
  • Niagara defeated Canisius 62-49 in the first meeting between the teams on Jan. 27, in the Koessler Athletic Center.
  • Canisius leads the all-time series 47-34 and has won three of the last four meetings between the teams in the Gallagher Center.
  • Senior Ashley Durham enters the week ranked ninth nationally in free-throw percentage (90.0) while as a team, Canisius ranks 10th nationally in the category at 77.0 percent.
  • The free-throw percentage of 77.0 is the second-highest in program history. 
  • In Sunday’s game against Fairfield, Durham became the 20th player in program history with 1,000 career points.
  • Canisius has held its opponents to field goal percentage of 36.5, the lowest in the program’s Division I era. 
  • Canisius is the only team in the MAAC with three players who have each made at least 35 3-pointers on the season.
  • Canisius has two players - Ashley Wilkes and Jen Lennox - with more than 25 blocks in the same season for the first time in the program’s Division I history.
  • Entering Friday’s game, Canisius has raised more than $2,800 for its 3 For A Cure Campaign, raising money for neurofibromatosis type 2 with each 3-point field goal made. 

NOTING THE GRIFFS

  • Senior Ashley Durham ranks third in the MAAC with a 15.6 scoring average in league play.
  • Sophomore Kayla Hoohuli is averaging 10.0 points in the last two games and has drawn a team-high 14 charges this season.
  • Junior Jen Lennox ranks third in the MAAC in blocked shots (1.2) and has five games this season with three or more blocks.
  • The Griffs are also the only team in the conference with three of the top 10 players in 3-point field goals made per game — Durham (1.5), Jen Morabito (1.5) and Hoohuli (1.4).
  • Sophomore Brooke Angelos has five assists in each of the last two games and has a 1.46 assist-turnover ratio in conference play.

SERIES HISTORY VS. NIAGARA

  • Canisius and Niagara are meeting for the 82nd time with the Purple Eagles standing as the most common opponent in program history.
  • Canisius leads the all-time series 47-34 The Griffs have won three of the last four meetings between the teams in the Gallagher Center.
  • Niagara defeated Canisius 62-49 in the first meeting between the teams in the KAC on Jan. 27. The Purple Eagles used a 16-2 run in the first half to break the game open. Canisius shot 1-for-20 on 3-pointers while Niagara went 7-for-9 from behind the arc.
  • The teams split the season series last year, with each team winning on the road. Canisius won 58-57 at Niagara on Feb. 4, 2012, when Ashley Durham went coast-to-coast and scored the game-winning layup with 0.9 seconds left.
  • Friday’s game is the 37th Canisius-Niagara game coach Terry Zeh has been a part of after nine years leading the Griffs and seven years as an assistant with the men’s team.

GRIFFS VS. NIAGARA

  • Senior Ashley Wilkes has scored in double figures in three career games against Niagara, averaging 11.0 points per game and shooting 63.6 percent from the floor.
  • Junior Jen Lennox has nine blocks in six career games against Niagara.
  • Junior Jamie Ruttle is averaging 11.3 points in six games against Niagara, scoring in double figures four times.
  • Senior Ashley Durham is averaging 13 points in her last four meetings with Niagara and has 19 assists in those matchups. 

BATTLE OF THE BRIDGE

  • This matchup for Canisius and Niagara is the second of two Battle of the Bridge matchups between the schools in women’s hoops.
  • Canisius holds a 12-11 lead in the points so far this season. Each basketball meeting is worth two points.
  • The Battle of the Bridge is an all-sports competition between the schools. Points are awarded for all regular-season, conference match-ups between the schools, except for cross country, swimming and diving and golf where the points are awarded based on results in the MAAC Championship.
  • After an 18.5-14.5 victory last year, Canisius has now won four of the last five competitions. Niagara won the inaugural competition in 2006-07 and also won in 2009-10 while Canisius also won in 2007-08 and 2008-09. 
  • Canisius needs 16.5 total points to retain the Cup while Niagara needs 17 points to reclaim the Cup.

NIAGARA SCOUT

  • Niagara enters Friday’s game with a 14-13 overall record and a 9-7 record in the MAAC. The Purple Eagles have won six of their last nine games.
  • Junior Lauren Gatto ranks third in the MAAC with a 14.4 scoring average. The forward also ranks third in field goal percentage (49.1) and ninth in rebounding (6.3).
  • Junior Kayla Stroman is second in the MAAC in assists per game (4.0) and fifth in steals (2.4).
  • Sophomore Meghan McGuinness is eighth in 3-point field goal percentage (35.3) and fifth in 3-point field goals made per game (1.8).
  • In conference play, Niagara ranks 10th in 3-point FG made per game (3.8) but ranks third in 3-point FG percentage (33.2) Niagara is second in 3-point FG percentage defense (28.4).
  • The Purple Eagles are averaging 59.1 points per game and allowing a 60.9 points. Niagara has a 34.8 offensive rebounding percentage and a league-best 64.4 defensive rebounding percentage. They have a turnover on 23.9 percent of their possessions.
  • Kendra Faustin is in her sixth season after three years as an assistant coach under Terry Zeh. The 2010 MAAC Coach of the Year led Niagara to the semifinals of the 2012 and 2010 MAAC Championships.
