Canisius College head coach and former Golden Griffin standout Randy Mearns has been named for induction into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

A native of St. Catharines, Ontario, Mearns played at Canisius from 1990 to 1992. He still holds school records with 95 career assists as well as 94 points and 49 assists in a single season. Overall, he totaled 190 points during his playing career with the Blue and Gold, which ranks second in the program’s record book.

Mearns has also served the last 15 seasons as head coach at his alma mater, leading the Griffs to the MAAC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2008 and 2012. Under his guidance, six players have been drafted in the first round of the National Lacrosse League, while leading the Griffs to 80 wins.

After graduating from Canisius, Mearns spent 10 seasons in the NLL with Buffalo and Rochester, totaling 214 points, 62 goals and 152 assists. He helped the Bandits to a title in 1993 and the Knighthawks to a championship in 1997.

Mearns also won a Minto Cup with St. Catharines in 1990 and was a five-time winner of the Mann Cup, taking two titles with Brampton (1992-93) and three crowns with Six Nations (1994-96). He served as an assistant coach on the 2006 and 2010 national field teams, with the 2006 squad winning the World Championship.

Mearns, who is already in the Hall of Fame as members of the 1994 to 1996 Six Nations Chiefs and the 2006 national team, will formally be inducted on November 9 in Burnaby, British Columbia.
