Canisius College head golf coach Todd Hummel announced today that David Berkun (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) and Cory Cullen (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis) will join the Golden Griffin program for the 2013-14 season.

Berkun was a four-year letterwinner for the Williamsville North Spartans and he served as a team captain during his senior season. Berkun earned all-state honors in the spring of 2013 after he tied for 10th at the New York State boy’s golf championship in Ithaca, N.Y., with his two-round score of 154. He was also awarded with the Section VI Sportsmanship Award. The Williamsville North team went undefeated during the 2012-13 season, earning the ECIC North Large School championship while also collecting the ECIC Team title and the Williamsville Cup.

Berkun also earned two varsity letters as a varsity basketball player at Williamsville North. In his senior year, he averaged 12 points per game and knocked down 46 3-point field goals, while shooting 41 percent from 3-point range. He participated in the 2013 International Junior Masters Tournament, the oldest international junior golf invitational in North America.

Cullen earned four varsity letters as a member of the golf team at St. Francis High School and he closed out his scholastic career by placing second at the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association Tournament, which qualified him for the 2013 New York State Catholic Boy’s Golf Championship in Pleasant Valley, N.Y. A two-time First-Team All-Catholic selection, Cullen was also honored for his work in the classroom as he was named a Western New York Ad-Pro Scholar-Athlete. He earned three varsity letters as a member of the boy’s basketball team at St. Francis, where he averaged 14.1 points and 3.5 assists per game as a senior for the Red Raiders.

Cullen also played in the International Junior Masters tournament in June. He plans on majoring in business management at Canisius.

The Canisius golf team returns four letterwinners from last year’s squad, which placed fourth at the 2013 MAAC Golf Championship in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The Griffs’ fourth-place finish was the program’s best since 1997, and the team also won its third-straight Little 3 team championship in Sept. 2012, by defeating local rivals Niagara and St. Bonaventure.
