The Canisius College men’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2013 season, falling to host St. Francis (Pa.) on Sunday afternoon, 4-1. The Griffs are now 1-1-0 on the season, while the Red Flash remains perfect with a 2-0-0 record.

“I thought we played well in the first half but a 10-minute stretch to start the second half put the game out of reach,” said Canisius head coach Dermot McGrane. “Our defending has to improve if we hope to have any success this season.”

The Red Flash scored the only goal of the opening 45 minutes of action when Stefan Sjekloca headed in a shot for the 1-0 lead at the intermission. St. Francis then extended its lead early in the second half with two goals just 90 seconds apart. The Red Flash was able to take advantage of Canisius mistakes on the defensive end for both tallies and the 3-0 lead.

Sophomore Chris Berardi got one goal back for the Griffs with his first collegiate goal in the 56th minute of play. Junior Derek Maier crossed the ball to his teammate and Berardi buried his attempt into the top right corner of the net for the 3-1 score.

St. Francis, however, would seal the victory in the 63rd minute when Nick Kolarac netted his second of the day and third of the season for the 4-1 final score.

Both teams fired 11 shots in the game with Canisius holding a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Andrew Garcia recorded five saves in net to earn the victory for the Red Flash.

Canisius now returns to Buffalo and prepares for its home opener next Sunday against UMass Lowell. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Demske Sports Complex.
