The Canisius College men’s soccer team begins MAAC play on Saturday night, hosting conference foe Manhattan. Kick off at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 7 p.m.

• Canisius is 8-15-1 all-time in conference openers.
• The Griffs, however, have won five of their last seven MAAC openers dating back to the 2007 season.
• Canisius lost a heartbreaker in its first conference game of the season last year, falling 2-1 in overtime to Rider. Despite a 23-11 advantage in shots, the Griffs allowed a game-tying goal in the 87th minute before surrendering the overtime tally.
• The Griffs had won their previous two MAAC openers over Siena (2011) and Fairfield (2010).

• The Griffs wrapped up non-conference play with a 4-3-1 record.
• It marks the first time since Canisius joined the MAAC in 1989 that the team posted a winning record in non-conference play in consecutive seasons. The Griffs were 7-1-2 against non-league foes in 2012.
• Canisius finished the 2013 non-conference season strong, going 3-1-1 in its last five games after a 1-2-0 start.
• The key for the Griffs’ improvement was on the defensive end. After allowing nine goals in the first three games of the season (3.00 per game), Canisius has surrendered just five tallies in the last five contests (1.00 per game).

• The Griffs remained eighth in the latest NSCAA North Atlantic Poll.
• Canisius has reached as high as sixth this season (Sept. 3).

• The Griffs and Jaspers resume their series after missing last season’s game due to Hurricane Sandy.
• Manhattan holds a slight edge in 22 all-time meetings, 11-9-2.
• The Jaspers won the last meeting in 2011, edging the Griffs, 2-1, in Buffalo. Canisius failed to convert a penalty kick with 2:17 remaining as Manhattan held onto the victory.
• The Griffs have won six of the last eight meetings between the two schools.

• Manhattan is still in search of its first victory of the 2013 season, entering the weekend with a 0-7-0 record.
• The Jaspers have been outscored, 18-4, in their seven games this year.
• Eugene Heerschap and Dan Laguna Kennedy both lead the team with two goals and four points this season.
• Alex Coates McDowall has started all seven games in net with a 2.65 goals against average and .581 save percentage.
