The Canisius College men’s soccer team lost to Niagara on Wednesday night, 1-0. The Griffs drop to 6-7-2 on the season and 2-4-1 in MAAC play, while the Purple Eagles improve to 4-10-1 and 2-4-1 against league foes.

“For the most part, I thought we played well tonight,” said Canisius head coach Dermot McGrane. “We got the ball into the dangerous areas but I thought the quality of our finishing wasn’t good enough and that is what cost us tonight.”

After a scoreless first frame, Niagara would net the game’s only goal in the 65th minute of play. Nick Garcia took the ball and scored from 20 yards out into the top left corner of the goal, giving the Purple Eagles the lead.

Canisius had a number of opportunities to draw even but couldn’t capitalize. Junior Asani Samuels forced a diving save in the 74th minute. In the 87th minute, freshman Thomas Teupen headed a ball toward the net off a long throw-in only to see a Niagara defender head the ball off the line and preserve the victory.

The Griffs controlled the pace of the game with a 20-9 advantage in shots on night. Both Canisius’ Ryan Arvin and Niagara’s Brenden Ottman posted four saves.

Canisius returns to action on Saturday, hosting Iona at the Demske Sports Complex. Game time between the two MAAC foes is set for 7 p.m.
