The Canisius volleyball team lost in three sets at Manhattan College on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffins fell 25-20, 25-13, 25-18 to the Jaspers at Draddy Gymnasium and dropped to 10-15 overall and 8-6 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Sophomore Lauren Siebert led the Griffs with seven kills on 13 attack attempts while senior Emily Elek added six kills. Junior libero Emily Litwin posted 19 digs for the second consecutive match.

“Early in the match, we bounced back from yesterday’s loss, but we just kept making too many careless plays and unforced errors,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “Against a good team like Manhattan, they will make you pay for those mistakes and we weren’t able to keep a steady rhythm or generate any momentum after the start.”

For the second consecutive day, Canisius jumped out to a big lead early in the first set. The Griffs were up 7-2 after a solo block from freshman Katlyn Tyler. The Jaspers went on a 12-3 run to take a four-point lead. The Jaspers led by as many as six points before Canisius won four straight points, including two kills from sophomore Rachel Kline, to make a late run. Manhattan would take five of the last seven points to close out the set.

After Manhattan cruised to a second-set win, the Griffs would win the opening four points of the third set. Manhattan again rallied, using an 11-3 run to take control of the set. Canisius wouldn’t get closer than three points the rest of the way as the Jaspers completed the sweep.

Malia McGuinness led all players with 13 kills and posted a .500 attack percentage for Manhattan (17-10, 10-3 MAAC). Ellie Wiekamp and Anna Kitlar each had nine kills with Teodora Peric leading all players with 33 assists.

Canisius returns to the road for two matches next weekend. The Golden Griffins open the weekend at Siena, with match time in Loudonville set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Notes: Manhattan swept the season series from Canisius for the first time since the MAAC went to a double round-robin schedule in 2006… Litwin had 10 of her 19 digs in the first set… The .073 attack percentage was the lowest by the Griffs in a conference match this season
