Canisius College head softball coach Mike Rappl announced today that Mo Harris (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence), Erika Mackie (Scranton, Pa./Holy Cross) and Madi Weathers (Westminster, Calif./Fountain Valley) have signed their National Letter of Intent and will join the Golden Griffins’ program for the 2014-15 season.

“We are excited to welcome Mo Harris, Erika Mackie and Madi Weathers to the Canisius softball program,” Rappl said. “All three of these student-athletes come to us having played at a high level of club ball, and that experience will allow them to step right in an contribute from day one to the 2015 Golden Griffin team.”

Harris is currently a senior at Clarence High School, the same high school program that has produced a number of former and current Griffs, including senior Valorie Nappo and sophomore Tori Nappo. Last spring as a junior, Harris hit .542 with a slugging percentage of .778 en route to being named the ECIC Player of the Year, First-Team All-State and First-Team All-Western New York. In her sophomore campaign, she hit .531 and was credited with the game-winning hit as the Red Devils won the New York State Class AA state championship. That season, she hit a school-record three home runs in one game to help lift Clarence to an 18-5 win over Niagara Falls to secure the Section VI Class AA title for Clarence. The daughter of Peter and Natalie Harris, Mo is planning on majoring in biology at Canisius.

“Mo is a hard-hitting corner-infielder who can hit for both power and average,” Rappl said. “She’s a local kid who has played at a really high level in club ball and for her high school team as well.”

Mackie is in her senior year at Holy Cross High School in Scranton, Pa. A left-handed pitcher, Mackie went 13-6 with a 1.13 ERA and allowed just three earned runs in 42 innings of work while tossing five shutouts during her junior campaign. Last spring, she averaged better than a strikeout per inning while only walking one batter per inning pitched before being named to The Times-Tribune All-Region team, the Lackawanna League Division III all-star team and earning honorable mention all-state accolades at the PIAA Class AA level. The daughter of Drew and Christine Mackie, Erika plans on majoring in pre-pharmacy at the College.

“Erika is a tall lefty pitcher with good speed and movement,” Rappl said. “She worked really hard to get her ERA from around 3.00 as a sophomore to 1.13 in her junior season.”

Weathers is in her senior year at Fountain Valley High School in Fountain Valley, Calif. Named the team’s best defensive player, she also plays for the Corona Angels, one of the premier club softball teams in the country. In 2011 as a sophomore, Weathers helped lead the Corona club team to a second-place finish at the U-14 Premier Girls Fastpitch National tournament after she went 4-0 in the circle with a 1.29 earned run average. The daughter of Keith and Kim Weathers, Madi is a four-time honor roll student and plans on majoring in journalism at Canisius.

“Madi Weathers is a right-handed pitcher who has great presence in the circle,” Rappl said. “She does an excellent job of setting up batters by changing speed and locations.”

The Griffs will open the 35th season in program history Feb. 8, 2014 when the team travels to play in the second-annual Cleveland State Viking Indoor Tournament. The Griffs return 12 letterwinners, eight position players and two pitchers from last year’s squad that went 22-25 overall and 6-10 in MAAC play.
