On Tuesday, April 15, 88 current and former Canisius student-athletes participated in the first Blue and Gold Networking Event, hosted by the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) inside the Koessler Athletic Center. The two-hour meet-and-greet was set-up to help current Canisius student-athletes meet former Golden Griffins and learn more about various professional fields, and what it takes to be successful in the workplace.
“The Canisius SAAC helped set this event up to help student-athletes here learn the first steps in networking themselves as professionals, not just as athletes,” Emily Elek, senior SAAC officer and volleyball player, said. “We worked with the Canisius alumni board so we could invite great alumni who were willing to share their stories about life after college athletics and explain what it takes to make a start in the professional world. I think the event was well-received by everyone who was in attendance. It was nice to see everyone mingling and having a good time. Hopefully, the current student-athletes that were there will use their new connections and what they were able to learn to their advantage in the future.”
The Canisius Career Center was on hand at the event, where it hosted a “LinkedIn Table” to assist student-athletes in setting up their own LinkedIn profile. The Office of Alumni Engagement also assisted in the event planning by helping get the word out to the College’s alumni base. Alumni from a number of the College’s programs were on hand to talk to the current student-athletes. Alumni from the sport administration, accounting, management, finance, biology, education and marketing programs at Canisius were just a few of the professional fields that participated in the event.
