Junior Connor Panas (Toronto, Ontario) was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week for his performance in the Canisius baseball team’s three-game sweep of Quinnipiac University last weekend. Panas is one of seven players across the country to receive the honor from Collegiate Baseball.

Panas went 8-for-11 with three home runs and 10 RBI as Canisius extended its season-long winning streak to nine games and moved into first place in the MAAC standings. Panas matched his career-high with four hits and set a career high with four RBI in the 5-0 win in the series opener. The junior then hit what proved to be the game-winning homer with a two-run shot in the sixth inning of a 4-2 win in the middle game. Panas hit two homers in the series finale, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and again driving in four runs.

On the season, Panas, who was named a Capital One Academic All-District First-Team selection last week, is hitting .352 with team highs in home runs (six), RBI (41), doubles (13) and slugging percentage (.593). The Griffs’ third baseman also leads the MAAC with a .444 batting average in conference play to go along with 26 RBI and a .825 slugging percentage in 18 MAAC contests.

Panas is the second Golden Griffin to win the award this year as junior Rohn Pierce received the honor after the first weekend of the season when he defeated No. 5 NC State. It is the fourth time a Canisius baseball player has won the award in the last four years. Sophomore Alex Godzak earned the award after throwing the first seven innings of the team’s nine-inning no-hitter against Iona on March 29, 2013. Sean Jamieson won the award in 2011.

Canisius (31-14, 14-4 MAAC), having already clinched a spot in the six-team MAAC Championship (May 21-25 in Lakewood, N.J.), returns to the field for a three-game series at rival Niagara University this weekend.
