Five Canisius College athletic teams earned the NCAA Public Recognition Award based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR), announced recently by the NCAA. The Golden Griffin men’s cross country, women’s basketball, golf, rowing and volleyball teams all earned the honor, which is presented to teams with APRs in the top-10 percent of their sport nationally for the four-year period ending in 2012-13. The five teams honored are the most for Canisius in a single year.

This is the sixth time the Canisius volleyball team has received a public recognition award since the NCAA started the program in 2004-05. Those six awards are the most of any volleyball program in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. This year is the third-straight time the golf team has been honored by the NCAA and this also marks two-straight public recognition awards for the men’s cross country program. The women’s basketball team made the public recognition list for the third time since 2004-05 and this is the first time the school’s rowing program has been honored by the public recognition award initiative.

Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear APR. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams who demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.

Additionally, the Canisius athletic department announced that the College’s 378 student-athletes posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.176 for the spring 2014 semester. A total of 245 student-athletes (65 percent) had a grade point average of 3.0 or better and 22 Griffs had a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the spring semester.

Sixteen Canisius programs had a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher in the spring 2014 semester, and eight of those programs had a cumulative team GPA of 3.2 or better. The hockey team posted a spring semester grade point average of 3.56 to lead all Canisius programs, followed by the synchronized swimming (3.44) and women’s cross country (3.33) teams. The women’s soccer (3.31), women’s swimming and diving (3.29), volleyball (3.28), softball (3.27) and men’s cross country (3.20) teams all recorded a team grade point average of 3.20 or higher for the semester. For the entire 2013-14 academic year, 13 programs had a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, led by the hockey team’s 3.52 team GPA.

“This past year was another successful year for the Canisius athletic department and our student-athletes’ accomplishments in the classroom continue to prove that we are fully committed to excellence in the playing arena and in the classroom,” Canisius Director of Athletics Bill Maher said. “We ask a lot of our student-athletes here at Canisius and they continue to impress our campus community with their hard work and dedication. As a member of our athletic staff, but more importantly as an alumnus, I am proud of all their hard work as both students and as athletes here and what they all contribute to the College on a yearly basis.”

The Canisius men’s teams had a record-setting performance in 2013-14 as well, as the Golden Griffins closed out the academic year ranked second in the men’s standings of the Academy Bus MAAC Commissioner’s Cup standings. Canisius racked up 56 points in the men’s standings, just 5.5 points behind Monmouth. The second-place finish for the Canisius men’s programs is the best for the Canisius men’s programs in the 33-year history of the MAAC Commissioner’s Cup.
