Former Griffs Win Gold at World Championships

Canisius head men's lacrosse coach Randy Mearns and five former Golden Griffins helped lead Team Canada to an 8-5 win over Team USA Saturday night in the gold medla game of the 2014 FIL World Lacrosse Championships in Denver, Colo. The win gives Canada its third gold medal after the team also won the world championship event in 1978 and 2006.

Mearns, who won a gold medal as an assistant coach for Team Canada in 2006, directled his team to a 6-1 record in the event, which featured 38 teams from across the world. Canada controlled the game against the USA by dominating the ground ball count, with Canada recording 35 ground balls against the USA's 22.

Other former Griffs on the Team Canada roster include Jason Levesque '04 who served as an assistant coach on Mearns' Team Canada staff, Dan Coates '11, Angus Dineley '07, Adam Jones '11 and Matt Vinc '05.

A total of nine former Griffs played in this year's FIL World Lacrosse Championships. Simon Giourmetakis '12 helped Germany finish 10th overall in the 38-team field and Travis Hill helped the Iroquois to their best finish ever, as the team took third place. Former Griff Brendan Murphy '12, who is currently an assistant coach on Mearns' staff at Canisius, played for the Belguim team.
