Volleyball Drops Two On Second Day Of UB Invite

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Canisius volleyball team lost both of its matches on the second day of the UB Invitational on Saturday at Alumni Arena. The Golden Griffins lost in five sets to Lehigh and then fell in three sets to the host University at Buffalo.

"In the three matches this weekend, we saw some good things and bad things," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "We can't be reacting to the other team and have to be more proactive in our approach on the court. It's definitely a weekend to build on and that can help us get better." 

Lehigh 3, Canisius 2 (13-25, 25-23, 14-25, 26-24, 9-15)

Canisius evened the match at one set apiece, using a six-point run that included a pair of blocks from juniors Lauren Siebert and Grace Streicher to take a 19-14 lead in the set. Lehigh would get within one point on two occasions late in the set, but a kill from sophomore Jacklyn Malusa put the set away.

After Lehigh won the third set, Canisius forced a decisive fifth set. With the score tied at 24-24, the Griffs used a kill from sophomore Katlyn Tyler and a Lehigh error to take the set. In the fifth set, Lehigh scored four straight points to go up 10-6, and the Griffs could never make a run.

Siebert had 12 kills and hit .500 in the match while junior Rachel Kline posted a double-double with a career-high 17 kills and 11 digs. Streicher also had a double-double with a career-best 40 assists and 11 digs to go along with a career-high six kills.

Buffalo 3, Canisius 0 (13-25, 18-25, 24-26)

Buffalo took advantage of 11 Canisius errors to easily win the opening set. The Bulls held a 15-9 lead in the second set before Canisius used a 6-2 run to get within two points at 17-15. Buffalo responded with the next three points and pulled away to go up 2-0 in the match.

The Griffs jumped out to a 12-8 lead early in the third set before Buffalo appeared to take control with a 12-4 run to go up 20-16. Canisius would battle back and fought off two match points to knot the score at 24-24 on kills from freshman Kristin Bendy and Tyler. Buffalo then took the final two points to close out the match.

Kline led Canisius with 12 kills while Streicher had 24 assists. Litwin added 18 digs.

Canisius heads to the state of Washington for the first time in program history next weekend for the Gonzaga Invitational. The Golden Griffins open play against Montana State at 7 p.m. in Spokane, Wash.

Notes: Bendy earned All-Tournament Team honors after averaging 2.27 kills and hitting .322 in three matches... Canisius and Lehigh met for the fifth time in program history and for the first time since 1998… Senior Olivia Chrzanowski played libero in the last two sets of the Lehigh match, her first appearance at the position of her career… UB has won now won five of the last eight meetings against Canisius… The double-double was the fifth of Kline’s career and also the fifth of Streicher’s career.
