Five members of the Canisius College men’s basketball program officially earned their undergraduate degrees from the school on Saturday, May 18 at the school’s undergraduate commencement ceremonies held at Buffalo’s Alumni Arena. Seniors Freddy Asprilla, Alshwan Hymes, Isaac Sosa and Harold Washington, along with redshirt junior Reggie Groves were among the 726 students on hand the earn their diplomas from the College.

“I had a chance to go to the commencement ceremonies and I got to speak to the guys and shake their hands after they earned their degrees,” Canisius head men’s basketball coach Jim Baron said. “This is what college basketball is all about. The chance to see these guys leave Canisius as fine young men and college graduates is very special to me as a coach. I know we only had one year together, but we won 20 games, the team advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIT and they all finished their degree work. Those are three things that those guys should be proud of. I wish them all the best of luck in their futures.”

Asprilla earned his undergraduate degree in psychology, while Groves, Hymes and Washington all earned their degrees in communications. Sosa, who was honored as a MAAC All-Academic selection and a I-AAA Athletic Director’s Association Scholar-Athlete during the 2012-13 season, earned his degree in finance.

The Griffs ended the 2012-13 season with a 20-14 overall record, the program’s seventh 20-win season and first since 2000-01. The Blue and Gold went 11-7 in MAAC play, the most MAAC wins in a year since 1998-99, and the berth into the CIT was the team’s first postseason appearance since 1996.
