BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. Ė The St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers shot 45 percent from the field and held the Canisius Golden Griffins to just 19 second-half points en route to a 67-51 win in the Pope PE Center in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. Saturday afternoon. The win ended the Terriers’ two-game losing streak and improved the team to 6-5 on the year while the Blue and Gold saw their three-game winning streak come to an end with the loss. Canisius is now 6-4 in 2013-14.

St. Francis guard Sheldon Hagigal scored a game-high 15 points in the win for the Terriers, with nine of those points coming in the game’s final 20 minutes. Forward Amdy Fall came off the bench and scored 11 points in the win, while junior forward Jalen Cannon had eight points and 10 rebounds. For the game, St. Francis out rebounded Canisius by a 39-28 clip and the Terriers were able to convert 17 Canisius turnovers into 13 points.

“This has been a long, emotional week for us with three games and final exams, but that’s no excuse for the effort today,” Canisius head coach Jim Baron said. “Give St. Francis credit. They just wanted it more than us. They played very physical, got on the floor for loose balls and made us turn it over. We have to keep working to get better. We need to be more physical when we are challenged and we need to make plays when we have the chance.”

Canisius senior Billy Baron scored 11 points in the loss for Canisius to go with six rebounds and four assists. Senior Chris Manhertz posted nine points and five rebounds, while fellow senior Jordan Heath chipped in eight points and five boards. For the game, the Griffs shot 34.7 percent from the field and 15.4 percent from 3-point land, making two of 13 shots from behind the arc.

The Griffs trailed at halftime by the score of 35-32, but came out in the second half and scored the game’s first six points to take a 38-35 lead with 15:23 left after Jordan Heath slammed home a missed shot by Baron. After a St. Francis timeout, the Terriers answered with an offensive rebound and put back by Hagigal. That basket not only ended a scoreless stretch for St. Francis that covered 6:30 of game action, but it also started a 15-2 scoring run for the Terriers that covered the span of 4:48 and put the home team up 50-40 with 9:53 left to play. Baron ended Canisius’ scoring drought with a lay-up moments later to make it an eight-point game at 50-42, but the Terriers kept on rolling and ended up stretching their lead to as many as 19 points with 2:02 left to play on a traditional 3-point play by Hagigal.

The 19 points scored in the second half are the fewest in a 20 minute session this season for the Griffs, and the Blue and Gold’s 51 points matched the lowest scoring out put of the season. St. Francis ended the game with 48 points in the paint and 32 points from bench players.

Canisius will return to action Monday, Dec. 16, when the Griffs travel to play at Holy Cross. Game time in Worcester, Mass., is set for 7 p.m.
