Canisius senior guard Billy Baron has been named the Corvias ECAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the Metro/Upstate region, the ECAC announced today. Baron, who was honored as the MAAC Player of the Week on Monday, averaged 30.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game in three MAAC contests against Marist, Rider and Monmouth Jan. 6-12.

In addition to his 30.3 points per game scoring average last week, Baron was good for 7.3 rebounds per game, highlighted by his game-high eight boards in the team’s win over Monmouth. He dished out 5.7 assists per game as well, with seven of those assists coming in the double-overtime win versus Rider. Against the Broncs, he played a career-high 48 minutes and ended the night by scoring or assisting on 23 of the Griffs’ final 25 points of regulation and 40 of the team’s final 50 points through the second half and the two overtime periods. In 124 total minutes played last week, Baron was charged with just four turnovers and he closed out the weekend with just one turnover in his last 98 minutes of game action.

Baron has scored 25 or more points in five-straight games and in six of the team’s last seven outings after scoring 27 points at Marist Jan. 6, a career-high 38 in a double-overtime win over Rider Jan. 10 and 26 points in the team’s victory over Monmouth Jan. 12. In the victory over Rider Jan. 10, the East Greenwich, R.I., native finished the night with 38 points, which ranks second all-time in program history for points scored by a Griff in Koessler Athletic Center. He also had the No. 7 play on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top Plays Jan. 10-11 after he hit the game-winning 3-pointer from the right wing as the final horn sounded in the second overtime.

Baron currently ranks sixth in the nation in scoring average at 22.9 points per game and he ranks fourth in the country in total points scored with 389 in 17 games. In the latest NCAA rankings, Baron ranks 25th in 3-point field goals per game (3.1), 35th in 3-point field goal percentage (43 percent) and seventh in free-throw shooting percentage (92.2 percent). Overall, he is averaging 4.9 assists per game, which ranks second in the MAAC and 67th in the nation, and he ranks second in the conference with his assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.44.

Canisius is 11-6 overall and 5-1 in the MAAC after beating Monmouth 87-67 Jan. 12, at home. The 5-1 start in league play marks the program’s best conference record through six games since 1996-97, when the team also started the conference slate with a 5-1 mark. The Griffs will return to action Friday, Jan. 17, when the team travels to play Iona in New Rochelle, N.Y. That game will tipoff at 9 p.m., and will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
