Canisius guard Billy Baron received yet another national award on Monday as he was named to the Mid-Major Madness All-America First Team. Baron is one of two players from the MAAC to be honored by Mid-Major Madness this year and he’s one of three players from a school in Western New York to be recognized following the 2013-14 season.

Baron, the 2014 Pepsi MAAC Player of the Year and a two-time All-MAAC First Team selection, became just the fourth player in school history to earn Associated Press All-America honors when that honor was released last week. Baron averaged 24.1 points, 5.3 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game in his senior season while helping the Golden Griffins to a 21-13 overall record and a 14-6 mark in MAAC play. The 6-foot-2 guard from East Greenwich, R.I., scored in double figures 33 times this season, he had 20-plus points in a game 26 times and he scored 30 or more points nine times for the Golden Griffins. He set the school’s record for 3-point field goals in a single season with 107 makes from behind the arc, and last week he became the first player in program history to appear in the State Farm Slam Dunk and 3-Point Championship, which was held in Dallas prior to the start of the NCAA Final Four. He is just the fourth player in school history to have more than 1,400 points and 350 career assists as a Griff and his team-high 180 total assists in 2013-14 make him just the third player in school history to dish out 150-plus assists in back-to-back seasons.

Joining Baron on the Mid-Major Madness All-America First Team are Fred Van Vleet and Cleanthony Early from Wichita State, Jerrelle Benimon from Towson and UC Sanata Barbara’s Alan Williams. Buffalo’s Javon McCrea was named to the Mid-Major All-America Second Team and Niagara guard Antoine Mason earned honorable mention honors.
