The Canisius College men's basketball team will play host to UMBC from the America East Conference in the 2012 Sears BracketBusters, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced today. The Golden Griffins and the Retrievers will play in the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday, Feb. 18, with game time set for 2 p.m.
The match-up resulted from Canisius' participation in the original pool of teams under consideration for the 2012 Sears BracketBusters. The Golden Griffins owe a return game to the Retrievers, with a game date to be announced after the schools officially agree on a non-conference contract.
The game on Feb. 18, will mark the first meeting between Canisius and UMBC in men's basketball. This will be Canisius' third BracketBuster game against a school from the America East Conference, as the Blue and Gold have already played Albany (2008) and Boston University (2011). The Griffs are 4-2 in their six previous BracketBuster games, with both of those losses coming on the road.
The Retrievers are currently 3-17 overall and 2-6 in America East play. UMBC is led sophomore forward Chase Plummer, who is scoring 14.0 points per game to go along with 7.5 rebounds per contest. UMBC has played three MAAC schools this season, falling to Loyola (Md.), Rider and Niagara.
Canisius is 4-17 overall and 1-10 in MAAC play after losing to Loyola (Md.) Sunday in the Koessler Athletic Center. Junior guard Harold Washington leads the Blue and Gold's scoring attack with 16.8 points per game, while sophomore forward Chris Manhertz is good for 8.3 rebounds per contest.
The Griffs return to action Thursday, Feb. 2, when the team takes on Iona in New Rochelle, N.Y. That game can be seen live on ESPN3 as part of the MAAC's National Game of the Week platform. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
