A strong defensive effort powered the Canisius College women’s lacrosse team to a 13-3 win over Siena on Wednesday night at the Demske Sports Complex. The Griffs matched a school record by winning their eighth-straight game to improve to 10-3 on the season and a perfect 4-0 in MAAC play. Canisius also clinched a bid to the MAAC Tournament with the win as the team looks to become the first squad in conference history to win three-straight league titles.

“We talked with the team prior to the game that the contest would be won tonight on defense and I thought we executed our game plan perfectly on that side,” said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. “At times, we were a little sloppy on the offensive side but our defense more than made up for it tonight. We’re playing really good lacrosse right now and just need to continue it starting with a key matchup at Fairfield on Saturday.”

The Griffs matched the program’s record for fewest goals allowed in a MAAC contest. Canisius also held the Saints to just 12 shots (the lowest total by a Canisius opponent this season), while forcing Siena into 20 turnovers.

Senior Lindsey Morgan and sophomore Tori Quinn each led the Griffs with five points in the winning effort. Morgan recorded two goals and three assists, while Quinn posted four goals and one helper. Senior midfielder Morgan Leonard also chipped in a game-high four goals with junior Maria Kotas recording two goals and one assist and senior Meghan McGunigle adding a goal and one helper.

Sophomore netminder Kayla Scully anchored the strong defensive performance by recording six saves in the win. Kotas also added a game-high five ground balls and four caused turnovers to lead the Canisius back line.

Siena (2-10, 1-2 MAAC) scored the game’s first goal 1:43 into the contest but it was all Canisius after that. Quinn tied the game at one just 14 seconds later and Leonard scored the next three goals for a 4-1 lead. Canisius added three more tallies before the Saints finally found the back of the net again with just five seconds remaining in the opening half as the teams headed into the intermission with the Griffs leading, 7-2.

Canisius outshot the Saints, 12-4, in the opening 30 minutes of action, while forcing the Saints into nine turnovers.

The Griffs continued to control the game in the second stanza. Canisius scored the first three goals of the period before the Saints got on the board with just 7:53 remaining in the game. The goal to pull within seven at 10-3 ended the second drought of more than 20 minutes in the game for Siena. Canisius then sealed its eighth-straight win with three goals in the final four minutes for the 13-3 final tally.

Overall, Canisius finished with a 22-12 advantage in shots with both teams winning nine draw controls.

Katie Maguire led the Saints with two goals with Ashley Holdridge recording six saves in net.

The Griffs continue MAAC play with a road contest against Fairfield on Saturday. A rematch of the last two MAAC Championships (both won by Canisius), the schools are set to meet at 11 a.m.
