The Canisius College men’s soccer team earned its first shutout of the season, playing to a 0-0 draw with cross-town rival Buffalo on Wednesday night. The Griffs are now 1-2-1 on the season, while the Bulls move to 0-3-2.

“We showed a big improvement defensively from our last performance,” said Canisius head coach Dermot McGrane. “We put a big emphasis on defense in practice since the last game and it really showed by getting our first shutout of the season. The next step is to put together a complete game on both the attacking and defensive sides.”

Senior netminder Ryan Arvin anchored the Canisius defense on the evening, recording four saves to earn his second collegiate shutout and his first in two seasons.

After a scoreless first half, Arvin was called upon early in the second stanza and responded well. The senior netminder made a nice save in the 51st minute off a long-range shot and then aggressively made a play on a ball after a streaking UB forward got past the Canisius defense in the 55th minute of play.

The score remained deadlocked at zero until the Griffs nearly netted a late goal in the final minute of regulation. Junior Denver Spearman made a nice move to beat a defender but his shot was saved and the Griffs could not capitalize on the rebound as the teams headed into overtime.

Neither team was able to take advantage of the extra 20 minutes and score a goal, with Arvin recording two of his four saves on the night in the overtime.

Buffalo finished the game with a slight edge in shots, 17-16, and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Waleed Cassis recorded eight saves to match Arvin with the clean sheet.

Canisius continues non-conference play on Sunday, hosting Robert Morris. Game time at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 3 p.m.
