LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The Canisius College women’s soccer team fell 1-0 to top-seeded Monmouth (15-1-2) in the quarterfinals of the MAAC Tournament on Friday afternoon.

The Hawks netted the game winner when Karly Tolentino dribbled into the box from along the left endline to draw a the Griffs defenders, then sent a quick pass to an open Monique Plescia inside the six. Plescia gathered the ball and beat a sprawling senior goalkeeper Megan Tock for the goal in the 68th minute.

“It was a goal that Monmouth is known for,” said head coach Jim Wendling. “It was a nice play by the young lady. It was something we knew of and were ready for, but that particular play we didn’t make the right decision, but it was a great play and we had some opportunities of our own as well.”

Despite a number of Canisius scoring chances in the final 22 minutes, the Griffs were unable to net the equalizer.

“I’m so proud of the girls and how they worked and fought today,” Wendling said. “We played a bit of a weird formation today that Monmouth has never seen before and I think it bothered them a bit. We got some opportunities, but unfortunately we just couldn’t score.”

The Griffs recorded seven shots in the game, with senior forward Brianna Smith (three) and senior midfielder Kelly McMahon (four) combining for all of the Canisius shots.

The Hawks put five shots on goal to Canisius’ four. Tock made four saves in the loss.
