VESTAL, N.Y. — The Canisius women’s basketball team shot 52 percent in the second half and pulled away with a 66-53 win over Binghamton University in the Events Center on Tuesday night. The Golden Griffins improve to 3-1 on the season.

Junior Kayla Hoohuli led Canisius with 17 points, including 4-of-5 on 3-pointers. Sophomore Tiahana Mills had a career-high 15 points to go along with five rebounds in a return to her hometown while sophomore Crystal Porter scored a career-high 14 points.

“Binghamton wanted to take away some of our players who had been scoring early in the season, and I was glad to see we were able to score through other options,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “It was a great night for Jen and Tiahana in their hometown in front of a great crowd.”

The teams played the first half at a deliberate pace, with Canisius breaking open the game by holding Binghamton scoreless for more than five and a half minutes. The Griffs scored seven straight points, getting four points from senior Jen Lennox and a 3-pointer from Jen Morabito, to take control of the half as Canisius went into the locker room with a 29-23 lead.

The Griffs shot the ball well to start the second half as they made five of their first seven shots, including three of four from behind the arc, to extend the lead to as many as 12 points early in the half. Binghamton was never able to get closer than eight points the rest of the way as Canisius held a comfortable lead throughout the entire second half.

Canisius shot 44.9 percent from the floor, shooting above 44 percent for the third time in four games on the season. The Griffs drained seven 3-pointers and shot 75 percent from the free-throw line.

Sherae Swinson led Binghamton (0-3) with 17 points while Vaneeshia Paulk had 11 points.

Canisius plays its next four games in Western New York, with three of them coming in the Koessler Athletic Center. The Golden Griffins host the University of Akron on Friday, with tipoff in the KAC set for 7 p.m.
