Charlotte used three consecutive one-out singles in the bottom of the 12th inning to defeat the Canisius baseball team 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.
Canisius recorded two hits in each of the first two innings but failed to capitalize on the early baserunners. Charlotte struck first with an unearned run in the bottom of the third. A bunt single and an error put runners at first and second with one out. Pierce got a fly out for the second out of the inning, but a balk forced home a run and put the 49ers up 1-0. Charlotte added two more runs in the sixth on a one-out, two-RBI double to take a three-run lead.
Canisius tied the game in the seventh, taking advantage of two Charlotte miscues. Senior Ronnie Bernick reached on a dropped fly ball and after senior Ryan Coppinger reached on an infield single, Bernick would score on a wild pitch. Junior Jesse Puscheck would homer to right field to tie the game at 3-3.
The Griffs would get a runner into scoring position in the eighth and 10th innings, but both times came with two outs and Canisius couldn’t capitalize. Charlotte loaded the bases with one out in the 11th inning, but junior Brandon Bielecki induced a 4-6-3 double play to get out of the jam and extend the game. In the 12th, the 49ers saw just five pitches to win the game. After a leadoff groundout, a single to right and a bunt single put a runner in scoring position. Zach Jarrett jumped on the next pitch and singled down the left-field line to end the game.
Bielecki (0-1) took the loss for the Griffs. Pierce allowed three runs, two earned, in seven innings while striking out six. Senior Mike Tolsma threw 3.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Canisius recorded 11 hits in the game with Puscheck producing two hits and two RBI while Coppinger also had two hits out of the leadoff spot.
Canisius and Charlotte conclude the three-game series on Sunday, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
