The Canisius softball team came up short in two games on Friday on the second day of the Loyola Marymount Invitational II at Smith Field in Los Angeles, Calif. Canisius (4-16) fell to Dartmouth by the score of 2-0 in the first game of the day before losing to UC Riverside 11-1 in five innings.
In the first game, Dartmouth pitcher Kristen Rumley threw a complete-game one-hitter where she fanned 11 to help lead the Big Green to the 2-0 win. Canisius junior Robin Kennery recorded the Griffs' lone hit with two outs in the first and Rumley ended up retiring the next 21 batters she faced to score her sixth win of the season.
After going through three scoreless frames, Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on an RBI-single by Megan Averitt. The Big Green (9-10) added an insurance run in the sixth when Rumley helped her own cause with an RBI-groundout. Canisius senior Jen Consaul took the loss for the Blue and Gold after she allowed two runs, one earned, on eight hits to go with four strikeouts and two walks.
In the second game of the day, UC Riverside scored 11 runs on 10 hits en route to an 11-1, five-inning victory. Canisius scored first in the top of the first on an RBI-single by freshman Lindsey Silfer, but the Highlanders (18-12) quickly knotted the score at 1-1 with a single tally in the home half of the first inning. UC Riverside scored four runs in the second and six more times in third for the 11-1 lead. Sophomore Jenn Solis allowed five runs, three earned, on five hits while walking three in 3.2 innings of work.
Canisius will close out its west coast Spring Break trip on Saturday with a pair of non-league games against Dartmouth and Loyola Marymount on the final day of the Loyola Marymount Invitational.
