Jason Weber made 17 saves to lead visiting Detroit to an 8-6 victory against the Canisius College men’s lacrosse team on Sunday afternoon. The Griffs drop to 3-4 and 1-1 in MAAC play, while the Titans improve to 4-4 and 1-0 against conference foes.

“We felt good about our effort today but we just made some simple mistakes,” said Canisius head coach Randy Mearns. “We didn’t handle the ball well at times and then their goalie came up with six saves in the third quarter where the game was ultimately decided. We had the opportunities and had good looks but just couldn’t bury them. Their goalie played well and I know that some of our players would like to have some of their shots back.”

Sophomores Billy Jacobbi and Nick Tuttle led the Canisius offense with two goals apiece. Juniors Tim Edwards and Austin Romantic also added a goal.

Junior Alex Govenettio recorded seven saves for the Griffs, while senior Kevin Collins recorded a career-best four caused turnovers. Edwards also won 13-of-18 faceoffs to lead Canisius at the X.

The teams battled in a closely-contested first half with neither team gaining more than a one-goal advantage. The even opening 30 minutes of action led to the teams heading into the intermission squared at three.

Detroit seized the momentum in the third quarter, however, with three-straight goals to take a 6-3 lead with 6:39 remaining in the quarter. Tuttle stopped the run with his career-best second goal of the game as the teams headed into the fourth with the Titans ahead, 6-4.

The Titans extended their lead to four with the first two goals of the final frame. Edwards and Jacobbi pulled Canisius to within two with 1:05 remaining but the Griffs were unable to pull any closer with Weber making two final saves to preserve the Detroit victory.

Detroit finished the game with a 37-36 advantage in shots, while the Griffs held the edge in ground balls, 23-22.

Shayne Adams led the Titans with four points and three goals in the winning effort.

Canisius takes a break from conference action for a road contest with nationally-ranked Albany. The Griffs and No. 18 Great Danes are set to meet at 3 p.m.

Game Notes: Tuttle scored one goal in the first 19 games of his career before his two-goal performance on Sunday … Weber’s 17 saves are the most by a Canisius opponent since Alex Hewit also recorded 17 stops for Princeton on Feb. 23, 2008 … The matchup was the meeting of the last two MAAC Champions.
