The Canisius College women's basketball team finished fourth in the preseason poll conduced by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference of the league's 10 coaches. The preseason poll was announced on Friday at the MAAC Preseason Awards Show, held at Marist College and broadcast on ESPN3.
Canisius received 64 votes in the poll to finish fourth, its highest projection since being picked third prior to the 2009-10 season. Defending league champion Marist was selected as a unanimous pick to finish first. Niagara (83 points) was picked second, followed by Loyola (67) and Canisius. Fairfield (54), Rider (49), Siena (45), Iona (41), Manhattan (35) and Saint Peter's (12) rounded out the poll.
Katie Sheahin of Loyola was chosen as the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year. Canisius junior Jamie Ruttle was one of six players eligible to be voted as the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year as Ruttle was named to the Preseason All-MAAC First Team on Nov. 1. Ruttle is the first Canisius junior to make the Preseason All-MAAC First Team since Becky Zak prior to the 2004-05 campaign.
Canisius opens the season on Friday night against crosstown rival the University at Buffalo. Tipoff in the Koessler Athletic Center is set for 7 p.m. The game can be viewed on GoGriffs.com and MAAC.TV.
