Preparing since the start of the season, the time has come for the Canisius College men's and women's cross country teams to compete at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. on Saturday afternoon.
The men's race will begin at 8 a.m. followed by the women's race at 8:45 a.m.
In the face of the current weaather conditions brought on by Hurricane Sandy, the conference championships will continue as scheduled.
At last year's MAAC Championships held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. on Oct. 28, the Golden Griffin men and women both placed fifth overall.
In their fifth-place finish, the Canisius women were led by former Griffs Jill Shea, Christine Mulvihill, and Julie Dahlkamper. Shea finished 19th with a time of 22:57 followed by Mulvihill in 21st (23:06) and Dahlkamper in 27th (23:26). Rounding out the Griffs' top-five were this year's returnees Mikelle Cala in 35th (24:00) and Bandi Pettit in 41st (24:22).
In the men's fifth-place performance last year, Chad Maloy led the Griffs with a time of 26:07 to take 15th. Following Maloy were Nate McCabe in 26th place (26:33), Aaron Hoven in 33rd (26:54), former Griff Jonathan MacDonald in 39th (27:00), and Alex Simon in 48th (27:20).
The last time the Golden Griffins competed in the Sunshine State at the MAAC Championships was in 2008 when the men's team finished sixth overall and the women's team also placed sixth.

The MAAC Cross Country Championships Recap Show will feature coverage of both the men's and women's races from the sound of the opening gun to the close of each race. The show, which can be viewed on Saturday at 5 p.m. on ESPN3, will also feature interviews with head coaches and student-athletes.
