The Canisius College track team opened its outdoor season at the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational on Sunday. Despite only competing in distance events, the Griffs managed to take 13th on the men’s side and 18th on the women’s side out of 26 teams.

“For both men and women we picked up right where we left off from the indoor season,” said head coach Nate Huckle. “This was by far the best outdoor meet we have had in my three springs at Canisius.”

The Griffs put five runners in the top-eight of the men’s 5000-meter run, including taking the top-three spots in the event.

Freshman Jeff Antolos won the event, finishing in 15:03.22. Junior Chad Maloy (15:08.49) and sophomore Cooper Roach took second and third respectively.

“Jeff, Chad and Cooper were impressive up front, as they broke the race open at about the 1.5 mile mark,” Huckle said. “Overall, we had 11 men hit their personal best times for 5k.”

Behind the Canisius top-three was freshman Xavier Sauvageau in seventh and sophomore Travis Jordon in eighth to round out the Griffs in the top-10.

The women also impressed in the 5k, as five members of the Blue and Gold ended up in the top-nine.

“Our group of five worked together selflessly as a team throughout the entire race. They fed off each other, and it resulted in four women breaking 19:00 for the first time.”

Freshman Haley Keene (18:40.55) was the Griffs’ top finisher in fifth place, with freshman Anna Phillips (18:45.01) in sixth right on her heels. Junior Jamie Wallace (18:46.01), freshman Macey Walker (18:50.30) and sophomore Robin Wagner (18:50.80) rounding out the Griffs in the field.

Canisius was also represented well in the women’s 800-meter run. Junior Brandi Pettit led the way in 14th place (2:26.60), with freshmen Katie Kerr (16th) and Catherine Niederpruem (19th) closely behind.

“Our middle-distance women had a strong showing as well,” Huckle said. “With Pettit, Kerr and Niederpruem all under 2:28 this early in the season, we should have a very strong 4x800 relay by the time MAACs role around.”

The Griffs will return to action on Saturday, April 12, when the Griffs head to Nazareth for the ROC City Invitational. Events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
