The Preseason D1 Cross Country Regional Team Rankings were released Monday afternoon and the Golden Griffins men’s squad was ranked in the Top-15 in the Northeast Region by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Canisius was ranked 12th overall in the Northeast Region after finishing 16th overall in the regional poll last season. The Griffs are one of two MAAC teams to be ranked, with the other being Iona, who finished third in the region last season.
The Golden Griffins will return 16 men’s runners, including three seniors, Andrew Coy, Christopher Sauvageau and Chad Maloy and will also bring in two freshmen on the men’s team. On the women’s squad, there will be 12 returners and six incoming freshmen.
The Griffs open the season this Saturday as the team travels to Niagara Falls, N.Y. to take on long-time rivals Niagara and St. Bonaventure in the Little Three Championship. The men’s squad won the event for the eighth-straight time last season and will look to continue the streak, while the women’s squad had a second place finish.
