The Canisius College women’s soccer team fell 2-1 to Akron (3-2-2) in its final non-conference contest of the season on Sunday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Canisius (2-6-1) opened the scoring in the 56th minute, when senior forward Brianna Smith took a pass from freshman midfielder Sabrina Fitzgerald and chipped it over Zips’ keeper. The goal was the 35th of Smith’s career, moving her into sole possession of third place on the Canisius all-time goal-scoring list.

The Zips managed to tie the game just nine minutes later after Sarah Sivic beat senior goalkeeper Megan Tock in the upper left corner from 18 yards out. Lani Smith then scored the eventual game winner in the 72nd minute from six yards out.

Tock stopped eight shots for the Griffs in the contest.

“Overall I was pretty happy with our defense,” said head coach Jim Wendling. "Obviously you don't want to give up two goals, but I thought they played well. I just think we had too many turnovers in the midfield. We've got to do a better job at finding connecting passes and giving it away so much.

Next, Canisius will kick off MAAC play with a trip to Iona. The Griffs and Gaels will square off Saturday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m.

GAME NOTES: Brianna Smith is now one goal shy of tying former teammate Kelly Reinwald for second on the all-time goal-scoring list… A win in next weekend’s MAAC opener would make the Griffs 5-1 in conference openers under Wendling… The Griffs are 11-11-3 against the Gaels in program history.
