The Canisius volleyball team lost in four sets at Marist College on Sunday afternoon. The Red Foxes won 18-25, 25-13, 26-24, 26-24 as the Golden Griffins drop to 10-17 overall and 8-8 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Freshman Katlyn Tyler led the Griffs with 13 kills on 27 attack attempts, posting a .444 attack percentage. Senior Roxanne Hernandez added seven kills and four blocks. Junior Emily Litwin had 24 digs while senior Sydney Palka and sophomore Grace Streicher combined for 39 assists.

“This effort was the closest we have looked to our potential this year,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “Marist just stopped more runs and found a kill before we did at critical times in the match.

“I’m extremely proud of our effort and fight at this time of year.”

Canisius controlled the opening set, scoring seven straight points in a spurt that include three kills from Tyler to go up 11-5. Marist would only get as close as 18-15 before Canisius scored the next two points en route to closing out the set on two service aces from Tyler.

Marist bounced back and ran away with the second set, scoring 11 of the final 12 points to even the match. In the third set, Canisius built as big as a six-point lead at 15-9 and led 18-14 before Marist made a 6-1 run to take a 20-19 lead. Canisius faced two set points down 24-22, but used a kill from freshman Jacklyn Malusa and a Marist attack error to tie the score at 24-24. Marist would take the next two points to win the set and go up 2-1 in the match.

The Red Foxes appeared to be pulling away with the fourth set, building an 18-13 lead. Canisius closed the deficit to 19-18 before Marist re-established a five-point lead at 24-19. The Griffs would fight off all five match points, including a kill from Malusa, service ace from Streicher and block from Hernandez and junior Olivia Chrzanowski, to make it 24-24. Marist would put the match away on its sixth attempt and take the match in four sets.

Mackenzie Stephens and Courtney Shaw each had 16 kills and four blocks for Marist. Kelsey Lahey led all players with 21 kills while Audra Brady had 50 assists.

Canisius wraps up its home schedule next weekend with two matches in the Koessler Athletic Center. The Golden Griffins host Quinnipiac on Saturday, with match time set for 1 p.m. on President’s Day in the KAC.

Notes: Marist sweeps the season series from the Griffs for the first time since 2009… Tyler posted double-digit kills for the fourth time this season… Hernandez now has 96 block assists on the season, moving into fourth on the single-season block assists list. The senior also ranks sixth with 232 career block assists…. Litwin now has 491 digs and ranks seventh on the single-season list.
