For the first time in over a decade, the Canisius College indoor track team will be competing at the MAAC Championships this weekend at the Armory in New York City.

While a team title is out of reach due to Canisius only competing in distance events, head coach Nate Huckle feels as though his team is determined to prove they belong on the track and aims to break a number of school records at the meet.

“This is a great opportunity for the team in a great venue down at the Armory in New York City,” Huckle said. “It’s different for us because in cross country we go in looking to get as close to that team championship as possible. Since we only compete in distance events, that’s not really possible as sprinters usually win track titles.

“However, we are looking to go in and set some personal bests. We’re hoping to set five, maybe six school records as well as have a couple of strong relays as well.”

Canisius has seen seven school records fall in its five meets this season, led by freshman Haley Keene who took home the records in the 800 and 1000 on back-to-back weekends and senior Catherine Phillips who set new marks in the mile and 3000-meter run.

The Griffs also set records in the men’s 3000-meter run (sophomore Cooper Roach), distance medley relay (freshmen Brennan Root and A.J. Stuver, sophomore Travis Jordon and Roach), and the 5000-meter run (freshman Jeff Antolos).

“They always have high expectations for themselves,” Huckle said. “They’re competitive athletes who want to prove that they’re distance runners who belong at the MAAC Championships. They’ve been talking about it all week, and really looking forward to see where they stack up against other distance teams heading into next fall.”

The Griffs will get underway at 4 p.m. on Friday.
