The Canisius college track team will begin its outdoor season on Saturday at the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational.

The Griffs are coming off their first indoor season since 2003 after being re-added as a program in January, broke eight school records in six indoor meets this winter. Head coach Nate Huckle is hoping for more of the same as the team hits the outdoor track this season.

“The indoor track season was nice in that it gave us the ability to focus on something through the winter,” Huckle said. “It’s a long three months here in Buffalo if you don’t have anything to focus on. They were definitely more inspired in their training over winter break and we came out and competed well in the indoor season. Because they’ve already run some fast times, they’ve got a lot of confidence going into the outdoor season.”

Indoor Recap

freshman Haley Keene

The Griffs concluded the indoor season on a high note by breaking four school records in the MAAC Championships, highlighted by the second place finish of the distance medley relay team. The group of sophomores Michael Anvelt, Cooper Roach and Travis Jordon and freshman A.J. Stuver broke the school record by over 11 seconds, and provided Canisius its highest place finish at the meet.

The women’s distance medley relay team also took home a new school record, as freshman Haley Keene, juniors Brandi Pettit and Jamie Wallace as well as senior Catherine Phillips set an new school mark in the event.

Additionally, Phillips and Keene each set a pair of school records individually during the indoor season. Phillips now owns the school marks in the mile (5:10.87) and 3,000-meters (10:03.97). Keene took the school records at 800-meters (2:22.56) and 1000-meters (3:01.53).

On the men’s side, Roach now owns a pair of records as well. He finished the indoor season in the record books in the mile (4:10.47) and 3000-meter run (8:32.72).

Freshman Jeff Antolos also had a strong winter, posting a personal-best in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:02.20 at the MAAC Championships, breaking his own mark from earlier in the season by more than 15 seconds.

Spring Schedule

Junior Chad Maloy

The Griffs were scheduled to begin their season two weeks ago at the Cornell Spring Invitational, but that was cancelled due to weather.

Canisius now has five meets on its schedule, with the first two meets of its season taking place in Rochester – in the University of Rochester Invite (April 5) and the Roc City Invitational at Nazareth (April 12).

“I just want to see the intensity that we had in the indoor season at the beginning of the outdoor season,” Huckle said. “This was the first time we had been on a track for more than 10 years and the excitement was palpable in the indoor season. I want them to take advantage of the competitive opportunity that they have and if they do that we’ll keep being successful and keep breaking records.”

The Griffs will then have their closest meet to home of the season as they participate in the Upstate Challenge at Buffalo on April 19.

Canisius will then close its regular season at the Brockport Golden Eagle Run on April 26.

The Griffs will then close their season at the MAAC Championships on May 3 and 4 in Lawrenceville, N.J. at Rider.
