The Canisius men’s cross-country team was picked to finish second in the MAAC preseason coaches poll, which was announced on Tuesday morning.
The Golden Griffins men’s squad received 104 points after placing second last season at the MAAC Championships. Canisius was picked behind defending champion Iona, who was voted the unanimous favorite with 121 points.
Rounding out the rest of the 11-team poll were Rider (96 points), Monmouth (85 points), Marist (76 points), Fairfield (70 points), Quinnipiac (52 points), Siena (47 points), Manhattan (37 points), Niagara (27 points) and Saint Peter’s (11 points).
Canisius’ women’s team was picked to finish in the top-five in the 11-team women’s poll as the Griffs were projected to finish fifth with (74 points) tying them with Rider.
Ahead of the Golden Griffins were Iona (120 points), Quinnipiac (104 points), Marist (97 points) and Monmouth (84 points). Rounding out the bottom of the preseason poll was Fairfield (61 points), Niagara (41 points), Siena (32 points), Manhattan (28 points) and Saint Peter’s (11 points).
Head coach Nate Huckle’s squads will open up the 2014 – 2015 season at the Little Three Championship, which will be held at Old Niagara State Park in Niagara Falls, N.Y. on Aug. 30. The rotating event will feature the Griffs as well as two crosstown rivals, St. Bonaventure and Niagara.
