The Canisius College men's lacrosse team hung with the nation's third-ranked team for three quarters but Cornell scored the final 10 goals of the game to secure an 18-7 victory on Tuesday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. The Big Red improves to 4-0 with the win, while Canisius drops to 0-3.

"I'm proud of our team today as we showed a lot of heart and a lot of fight," said Canisius head coach Randy Mearns. "We rose to the challenge of facing one of the nation's top teams but we have to play for four quarters. For three quarters, the offense played well, we did a good job on faceoffs and Alex Govenettio was making saves for us. We had a couple of miscues in the fourth and it then started to get away from us a little. Then we pressed and took some bad penalties and a good team like Cornell is able to take advantage.

"We'll now take a look at the video and get ready for another good team in Albany, where we'll have to come back strong and play a full 60 minutes if we want to get the result we're looking for."

Sophomore Austin Romantic led the Griffs with two goals, while sophomores Brandon Bull and Tim Edwards each chipped in two points with a goal and an assist. Seniors Kevin Lalley and Joe Rautenstrauch plus freshman Vince Gravino rounded out the scoring for Canisius with a goal each.

Sophomore Alex Govenettio anchored the Canisius defense with a career-best 13 saves - his third-straight contest with double-digit stops.

The Griffs opened the early lead in the contest thanks to goals by Gravino and Romantic before Cornell answered back with a pair of tallies. Edwards, however, gave the Griffs the lead after the first period of play with his first score of the game with just 23 seconds remaining in the opening frame.

Cornell started the second stanza strong, netting the first four goals of the period in less than six minutes to grab a 6-3 lead. Canisius once again finished the scoring in the quarter when Bull scored off a feed from Edwards for the 6-4 score at the intermission.

Lalley brought Canisius within one to start the second half with his first tally as a Griff. Cornell then twice extended its lead to two only to see the Griffs answer right back. Romantic's second goal of the day cut the Cornell lead to one, 8-7, with 4:53 remaining in the third but it was all Cornell the rest of the game.

The Big Red finished the contest on a 10-0 run to secure the 18-7 win. Cornell outshot Canisius, 16-4, in the final 15 minutes of action, scoring eight of the goals in the final stanza.

Rob Pannell finished with a game-high eight points for the Big Red on four goals and four assists, while AJ Fiore recorded six saves in net to earn the victory.

Overall, Cornell finished the game with a 57-28 advantage in shots and a 33-26 advantage in ground balls. The Big Red also won 18-of-27 faceoffs.

Canisius continues non-conference play on Saturday, hosting Albany at the Demske Sports Complex. Game time is set for 1 p.m.

Game Notes: Cornell has won all 10 meetings with Canisius ... Lalley, a senior transfer from Towson, netted three goals during his career with the Tigers ... Govenettio is the first Griff goalie to record double-digit saves in each of his first four career starts ... Rautenstrauch now has a goal in the last two games after not recording one in his first 27 career contests ... Edwards set career highs with six face-off wins and seven ground balls in the game ... Freshman Rich Stapleton earned his first career start on defense, replacing DJ Giacobbo, who missed the contest due to an injury.
