Men's Lacrosse Adds 15 Newcomers to 2014 Roster

Canisius College men's lacrosse head coach Randy Mearns announced the addition of 15 players to the 2014 Golden Griffin roster on Wednesday.

“We have added 15 phenomenal student-athletes to our program and since coming onto campus in the fall, they have done nothing but improve our performance on the field and in the classroom,” Mearns said. “As a staff, we are very excited about the Class of 2017. They are making our program better each and every day along with our 27 returning players. We are looking for a number of our freshmen to come in and contribute immediately to our success in the spring."

Canisius is returning nine starters and 25 letterwinners from the 2013 team.

Newcomers
Nick Binnert • M
Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta HS
Played four seasons at Rush-Henrietta High School • Two-time team captain • Accumulated 92 goals and 52 assists during his career, including 51 goals and 30 assists as a senior • Earned second-team all-league honors as a senior, while receiving honorable mention during his sophomore and junior campaigns.

Paul Burich • LSM
Pendleton, N.Y./Canisius HS
Earned three letters at Canisius High School • Collected 10 goals and 100 ground balls as a senior • Accumulated 18 goals and 180 ground balls during his career • Named to the all-league team on two occasions • Also a goalie on the school’s soccer team, helping the Crusaders to a state championship.

Connor Cleary • D
East Amherst, N.Y./Canisius HS
Earned four letters at Canisius High School • Named to the All-Western New York Second Team and was a two-time selection to the All-Catholic Team • Accumulated 204 ground balls, four goals and five assists as a senior • Collected 730 ground balls, eight goals and 12 assists during his four-year career.

Ryan Culley • M
Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side HS
Played two seasons at South Side High School • Earned National Honor Society accolades.

James Deakin • D
Clarence, N.Y./St. Joseph’s Collegiate
Earned four letters at St. Joseph’s • Named the team’s Defensive MVP • Also collected All-Catholic League accolades • Recorded seven goals, 12 assists and 85 ground balls as a senior • Totaled 20 goals, 33 assists and 288 ground balls during his career • Also a member of the hockey team with the Marauders, helping the team to Catholic State Championship twice.

Jeff Edwards • M
Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt HS
Played three seasons at Jamesville-Dewitt High School, helping the Red Rams to the 2011 state title • Earned first-team all-league honors as a junior and senior, while receiving honorable mention as a sophomore • Recorded 27 goals and 12 assists as a senior in addition to winning 70 percent of his faceoffs • Overall, registered 52 goals and 41 assists during his career • Also a member of the basketball and golf teams at Jamesville-Dewitt.

Adam Huber • A
Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron HS
Earned four letters at Mount Hebron High School • Collected first-team all-county honors as a senior and second-team accolades as a junior • Totaled 50 goals and 28 assists as a senior and 108 goals and 73 assists during his career.

Jon Lunney • M
Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville North HS
Played four seasons at Williamsville North High School • Earned first-team All-Class B honors • Recorded 36 goals, 40 assists and 65 ground balls as a senior • Also a member of the hockey team with the Spartans, helping the team to the state championship.

Michael Mulvihill • M
Dewitt, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt HS
Earned two letters at Jamesville-Dewitt High School • Helped the Red Rams reach the state semifinals both seasons, including the title game once • Totaled 11 points, four goals and seven assists during his career • Also a member of the soccer and basketball teams with the Red Rams.

Kael Naylor • M
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/Evan Hardy Collegiate
Played field lacrosse for the Elev8 and for the Saskatoon Scorpions • Won two Junior B Box Lacrosse Provincial Championships in 2010 and 2011 • Also played football and hockey in high school.

Mike Perrino • M (Junior)
Solon, Ohio/Roanoke College/Roanoke College
Spent the 2013 season at Roanoke College, appearing in three games with two goals • Also played for Wooster College during the 2012 campaign, totaling 19 points, 14 goals and five assists in 14 contests, while winning 53.9 percent of his faceoffs • Earned four letters at Solon High School • Collected all-region honors in 2011, totaling 36 points, 31 goals and five assists.

Lewis Vaccaro • M
Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon-St. Jude HS
Earned four letters at Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School • Totaled 55 goals and 40 assists during his career • Two-time selection to the All-Catholic Team • Also a member of the football and basketball teams with the Tigers.

Vinny Valenza • A
Columbia, Md./Long Reach HS
Earned four varsity letters at Long Reach High School • Two-time Team MVP • Collected second-team all-county honors • Totaled 88 goals and 50 assists during his career, including 35 goals and 18 assists as a senior • Also a member of the hockey team with the Lightning.

Steve Wizniuk • M
Shelby Township, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate
Earned two letters at De La Salle Collegiate • Named MVP of the Kyle Rymiszewski Cup • Also a Team MVP in one season at Utica High School.

Jordan Zaman • M
Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady HS
Earned four letters at Schenectady High School • Collected first-team all-league honors and received honorable mention to the all-area team • Also played one season on the football team with the Patriots.
